This is why it’s great to have Al Franken as a Senator from Minnesota. During yesterday’s hearing for NLRB nominee Craig Becker, Franken used his time to pwn John McCain for holding Becker’s nomination without submitting to Becker a single question during the entire hold. It’s beautiful. Watch it:
And here’s a rough transcript (below the fold):
FRANKEN! Thanks for coming to this unusual, unique hearing. I’m a member of 4 labor unions, don’t know how many others are. I appreciate how important this area of the law is.
Most people who are nominated to the NLRB have either represented workers, or management.
Becker: Yes, it’s a divided bar.
Franken: Enzi’s staffer represented management for his entire career. It’s not unusual for someone who’s represented labor to be nominated to the NLRB.
Becker: Correct
Franken: This whole thing about the SEIU, it’s happened before. If they represented a firm, they could recuse themselves if a former client appears before the board. Nothing unusual there. You answered some 200 questions, right?
Becker: Yes
Franken: How long did they have to answer the questions?
Becker: I don’t know, but there’s been a back and forth since the spring. Whoever had questions had months to submit them to you.
Franken: This is an unusual hearing. I’m new the Senate, but it’s unique. Only other board hearing was for a chair. This wasat the insistence of one member who held your nomination. Did that member submit any questions to you?
Becker: No.
Franken: Really. He, or she didn’t submit any questions over all those months. Huh. Thank you, Mr. Chairman.
Harkin: Are your dues paid, Senator Franken?
Franken: Uh, for three unions.

About Work in Progress
I needed that.
What unions is he a member of anyway? I assume AFTRA, SAG, and WGA-East? Is he including associate member programs such as Working America or Fight Back America for the 4th?
That’s nice.
Now, can he steamroll Scott Brown and keep him from sabotaging the vote?
Beautiful.
*wicked, evil laugh*
Very nice catch.
It’s very bad that McCain has placed an extended hold on the nomination without submitting a single question. He has a staff who could generate boilerplate questions to back up the obstructionism. The fact that he hasn’t even directed that questions be submitted even if they are just toy questions shows very poor character on his part.
Al Franken may be shaping up to become a powerful progressive voice.
I’m sure McInsane would’ve placed a hold on Becker’s nomination if he’d have came from the management side…/s
And why, pray tell, is this kind of obstruction not regularly reported in the MSM? Real journalists ought to be having a lot of fun reporting on the stupidity of the obstructionists. Oh well…….
McCain is grinding his teeth right now, probably chewing on Cindy for supporting Gay marriage. Hating the fact that Palin has to help him get re-elected. Poor Johnny.
Wow, an actual pro-people Democratic Senator. I could get used to this.
Me, too! Thanks, Sen. Franken!
Jeez, do we have to have anti-cardcheck ads on the site every time we talk about Unions?
And knock ‘em dead, Senator!
I’m telling you, it is finally “the Al Franken Decade”….
Yes, and he is My Senator, Al Franken, who is not afraid to oh-so-politely kick Reverse Ace to the curb.
So, given that McCain has stalled Becker’s confirmation so that Brown could be seated and Becker can be filibustered; one would ask, who pwnt whom?
Brown gets final papers tomorrow – and is then seated
If the Dem Senate had wanted to do a 60 vote conference health bill it had to tomorrow to do it – but it did nothing. The seating of Brown was not speeded up by McCain -it ran the usual course for a Mass election certification.
Papau,
I believe you are incorrect. Please read.

Sen. Franken iz in yur base, killin’ yur doodz.
does anyone know if what mccain did is common? ie, one guy is the ‘hold’ guy, while everyone else does the job of asking? I’m assuming all those questions were from republicons..
Franken is a ray of sunshine in a gloomy place. Thanks Michael.
