Blanche Lincoln issued a statement about whys he joined the filibuster to oppose Craig Becker for the NLRB. Basically, she filibustered Becker because she wants to filibuster the Employee Free Choice Act.
“I believe there should be a balance between the rights of employers and employees in the workplace regarding labor laws and regulations that govern collective bargaining. After reviewing Mr. Becker’s record, I became concerned that his approach to these important issues could undermine the existing rules on union elections on matters that in my view should be addressed through the regular legislative process.”
Forget the fact that the NLRB simply cannot change the law on its own to allow majority sign-up, and that Becker said he didn’t think it would be appropriate to do so, and that Becker explained his previous academic writings as a very different role from an NLRB board member. Blanche Lincoln is doubling down on corporate philosophy in a desperate bid to keep her Senate seat. She opposed Becker because she wants issues to “be addressed through the regular legislative process,” which means she wants to ensure the Employee Free Choice Act go through the Senate so she can make sure to kill it herself.
Can we just abolish the Senate already?

Colored me shocked that a corp whore would be willing to filibuster against labor. /s
Howard Dean said yesterday we have 4 jerks in the Senate, the Rs have 41.
What do we need her for? Say bye bye Blanche, and go on ahead, send us a real repug from AR.
I have a crack pot theory about why EFCA is referred to as “card check.” [Me? Crackpot? Heh!]
Anyways, regardless of the false assertion that EFCA eliminates the “secret ballot” and the Luntzian talking points on that basis, I think it is called “card check” because of the old phrase “card carrying ACLU member” or it’s other iterations intended as a slur.
Card Check = “Librul” and therefore should be killed!
Only 4? I can think of a lot more D jerks in the senate than that. And what’s with the “we?” Do you think many of us identify with the D party, even though you might?
Blanche should just join Leirberman’s party.
Plantation Blanche always lies.
Just like her approach to reducing costs on health care…
“We can’t afford it”
Blanche Lincoln needs an employment choice starting with “un”. It’s amazing how out of touch these Senatorial millionaires are with the average American… one party obstructs, one does nothing. I can’t tell which is which anymore.
She doesn’t ever have to worry again. Besides her senate pension, she’ll be on the dole at the corp boardrooms. Hopefully by January 2011.
Actually, it’s even simpler than that.
You sign a card that says you want a union local representing you, and they check the cards; if a majority of the employees turn in properly signed cards, that’s it: it’s now organized labor.
‘Card-carrying’ means you have a membership card in whatever group they’re talking about.
And make it a party of two?
Joe’s ego is too big for him to put up with the competition.
But he could be the Ranking member of his party!
Fixed it.
I don’t disagree with you an inch.
I’m just saying that whole “card” and “card carrying” meme fits very nicely with the old and established meme to defeat it from the Luntzian point of view. It’s so LIBRUL!
More to the point, that means that Blanche HAS to be against it.
She is worse than a Republican because she gets to caucus in our camp. Can’t wait to see her gone!
Card carryin’, dues payin’ Wobbly.
Any worker can join the IWW. Get enough Wobblies in a workplace you’ve already got an organized international union behind ya. There’s no disputing that red membership book.
She was born rich… Thus the name Plantation Blanche… and her dogged determination to abolish estate taxes this year, protect big pharma and insurance.. while pummeling labor for blood sport.
I swear she still keeps slaves in her basement down on the plantation.
I know her poll numbers are terrible but what do you hear people saying about her – if anything?
Harry Reid needs to reclaim some authority as Majority leader. Lincoln betrayed her party and voted to uphold a filibuster. The Repubs had enough votes to sustain the filibuster on their own. Lincoln did this for her own political reasons. The appropriate reprimand for this type of betrayal would be to strip her of her current committee postions and assignments and move her office to Franken’s (most Junior) and either give her office to Franken or whoever else is in line for it and move Franken’s ionto theirs. she should now be given a choice to be the lowest ranking Democrat or leave the caucus.
If Reid were to do this even once, it would stem the breakdown in party discipline.
Can someone explain how the heck these people became democrats…or accepted as Dems ?
Maybe it’s the same logic that sees BClinton as a great Prez.
Anyone remember the story from ’09 or perhaps ’08 where VP Biden helped raise over 500000 for this creep. And they still have the bald face to get on the TV and speak about doin things for the American people.
Any ideas why the WH trying to bundle the Patriot Act(reauthorization)with the Defence bill.Yes a Dem prez candidate who ridiculed the patriot Act to become Prez is now submitting it for reauthorization, and he is supposed to be a constitutional lawyer.
Most people don’t have a clue.
But everyone is pissed.
I should have used quotes, that was Dean said that.
We have been working hard in NM to make the Dems stand for something. I don’t have faith in what a third party can accomplish, b/c we have seen the disaster of a third party electorally here in terms of what does happen.
What the heck? You can vote for our old Governor Gary Johnson, he’s running for president on some outlier ticket. I work here for the change I can help to happen. Perhaps we are leading the nation in what is possible. I don’t know. Maybe you will like Gary better than I did. He seems to be honest, which says something.
Our most progressive Ds in NM have written and passed (maybe even with some bipartisan support) to move our state investment money into local banks. That’s cool with me.
This is a small state where we are used to being heard, and our legislators respond. Let’s see what our friend Tom Udall can do to change the Senate.
i don’t know whether fair labor practices and workers rights are part of the Democratic party platform, but if they are not then this party does no longer represent the Democratic party’s core ideals. Baring the burial of the Senate as a legislative body favoring the monied interests, perhaps an adherence to the Party platform should be at minimum subject to an enforceable litmus test.
This is why it is time to start organizing against the filibuster. It is not going to happen anytime soon, but it is only by making the case who this rule is undemocratic and undermines accountability that we can begin to get pressure on Dems who join with Republicans to abuse it. (Of course, things that are not going to happen over night are the things you need to get working on now – that is the only way to make them possible.) It is one thing to vote against the party on the merits – that is going to happen. It is quite another to abuse procedures to prevent votes on party agenda items.
For anyone who is interested, Chris Bowers is working on a whip count on ending the filibuster here at Open Left.
Neither party’s officeholders are going to do anything to limit or stop the obstructionism in the Senate. This is because the officeholders are politicians and the Senate rules that allow obstructionism are a form of power available to any Senate officeholder. Politicians seek to maintain or enhance their own power as a greater priority than effective government probably in all cases where effective government requires the politicians to limit themselves.
For a classic example see: “Campaign finance reform legislation”. Why hasn’t it really been achieved? Because politicians don’t vote to cut off their own gravy trains.
Yes, therefore, it is implicit that our political class has a parasitic relationship to us, but, then, this should not come as a surprise to anyone who has been paying attention.
Get rid of the Senate? The jerks and the barbarians have done that. It’s just a matter of the corpse recognizing that it is dead.
“Blanche, you ignorant . . . ”
Sorry for the anti feministing phrasing . . .
I’d say, and have said, the same about Stupak, Nelson, and many, many others not in favor or in representation of the masses . . . so I hope I’ve not offended the femme gender . . .
But I hate this woman as much as I hate any males of the persuasion . . .
Bingo. This woman is NOT a Democrat. No more is Ben Nelson. or Max Baucus, or Bart Stupak.
I see red these days whenever I hear “the Democrats have a ‘filibuster-proof’ 60 votes” or “Democrats control(ed) Congress”, because it is not true and was never true.
At the very least, Lincoln (how ironic her name) and Nelson are NOT, NOT Democrats and never were. I don’t care what they call themselves, or what label they got elected under, they are not Democrats.
Possibly they are slightly less batshit crazy than today’s Repubs, and therefore could not get elected as Repubs these days, so, they ran as Dems.
Can anyone tell me ANY Democratic position or principal either of these two has ever supported? I rest my case.
Amazing how the Bush/Cheney dominated Republican COngress masked just how vile, sordid and odious the Democrats really are. So now we know, and it may be too late to do anything about it.
Despair…
Blanche is just living up to her correct title – she has always has been – Lincoln (D – WalMart).
i’m on a mission to counter the misuse of the term filibuster: lincoln hasn’t actually filibustered becker – couldn’t have because there hasn’t actually been a filibuster.
she’s still a corporatist hack.
Exactly thereby eliminating the secret ballot – which is why so many are against it.
