Chuck Schumer by Zawezome on Flickr
It takes some gall for the Senator who literally represents Wall Street to not just congratulate Blanche Lincoln for “fighting Wall Street” with her sham derivatives bill, but to in the same breath congratulate her on “fighting unions.”
Sen. Chuck Schumer (N.Y.) held up two fists and said of her primary campaign: “Fighting Wall Street with one hand, unions with the other.”
The aftermath of the Arkansas Senate race is really quite illuminating to see just who in the Democratic Party actually stands up for its core constituents. (Hint: not a one.)
UPDATE: Schumer tried to walk back his statement today, but it’s not helping. Greg Sargent:
That, naturally, pissed some people off, since it smacked of specifically cheering on Lincoln for defeating unions, as if they should be treated as just another garden variety opponent of Dems whenever they threaten a Dem incumbent. But Schumer spox Fallon says it was just a reference to this recent ad, in which she said:
“I won’t back down to the Washington unions or the Wall Street banks that don’t care about Arkansas.”
Seems fair enough. Still not crazy about the fist-pumping bit, though.
I disagree that it’s “fair enough.” First, I’m just skeptical Schumer would reference one of Lincoln’s ads to congratulate her. But let’s say he did: it’s completely inappropriate for Schumer, who is vying to be the next Senate Majority Leader should Reid lose reelection, and who led the DSCC for two cycles, to at all congratulate anyone for “fighting unions,” even if Blanche’s campaign made the reference in the first place.
This incident is indicative of the club-like nature of the Senate, and how its members prioritize saving their own above all else. It doesn’t matter if Lincoln said she was the one fighting Wall Street and unions in the first place. Chuck Schumer shouldn’t use that as an excuse to echo that message on the floor of the Senate.
P.S. Hey Chuck, what’s a “Washington union?”

jesus what a pig. forgive me for belaboring the obvious, but what does it say that a guy running for Speaker celebrates fighting Labor ?!?!?
googling furiously to see if any Union/Labor orgs have contributed to his campaigns – Firefighters ?? SEIU white collars ???, CWA ???
This cannot end well for national Democrats. Institutionally, this is the death of the party. America cannot afford to have TWO parties representing Capital while BOTH of them call Labor names.
Seriously, this won’t end well for America either. If working people can’t find a party structure where we are welcome, we’ll either found another place to make our voices heard. Or we’ll go outside the system.
That way lies what FDR feared — a huge group of Americans with no stake in a positive outcome for the current Capital-stacked system.
wow. Labor is likely to be just as insulted by the weak ass explanation
My willingness to give Schumer the benefit of the doubt is finally exhausted.
He has had a lot of support from unions over the years. This sort of behaviour is inexcusable.
Yupper.
In the Twin Cities we’re in the midst of the largest nurses’ strike in US history (today only!) and the PR strategy for the hospitals leading up to this point was to blame “national unions” for forcing their agenda on Minnesota. Lincoln’s “Washington unions” is the exact same corporate spin, and Schumer should not be supporting it. It’s typical divide-and-conquer maneuvering by the GOP political machine, with Democrats internalizing the message.
Because they are equally the enemies of the Democratic Party and their candidates. Just a simple admission that the clubhouse is fairly exclusive and unions are not members.
I have long loathed Schumer, so this is absolutely no surprise.
Schumer is only friends to his obscenely wealthy payola givers.
All registered Democrats should use the ears they have to HEAR this turncoat, and open the eyes they have to SEE and WITNESS this turncoat.
Chuck Schumer is NOT our friend; we cannot rely on Schumer. Schumer is in only for the money and is beholden only to the corporations and hedge funders who buy him off.
The party Democrats sure seem bent on destroying all of their ties to labor. I hope labor calls them on it. A progressive party could use that clout that traditionally was used to elect Democrats. No doubt the Rahm Emanuels are whispering that labor will shut up and fall in line in the end.
You just need to think of the Democratic party and the Republican party as the corporatist party. That will explain everything and eliminate a lot of hand wringing.
Schumer essentially represents Wall Street in DC. For *him* of all people to use Wall Street as a bugaboo just shows how much contempt he has for us “little people”. He’s not even bothering to lie convincingly anymore.
The House-Senate conference committee is meeting to finalize the financial “reform” bill and all the markets close today up by 2.5 percent or more. That should tell you all you need to know about what’s coming out of Schumer’s committee.
And that, ladies and gentlemen, is the end of that.
This sure isn’t the Democratic party of my father, or my grandfather for that matter.
Quick O/T Heads-Up (apologies for the O/T, but this is big) –
Iara Lee, a passenger on the Mavi Marmara, managed to keep the Israeli Defense Forces from stealing all of her video footage of the attack. She has an hour of it which she’s presenting at the United Nations RIGHT NOW:
C-Span’s not covering this from what I can see.
There is no more “left” in political circles in this country. Today’s “Democrats” have much more in common with Ronald Reagan than Ronald Reagan had with Eisenhauer.
That will never be shown on the MSM in this country. Ever.
o/t Murkowski’s STFU EPA Res:
Baucus, Tester, Stabenow, Levin, Conrad, Webb & Byrd – No,
Rockefeller, Bayh, Landrieu, – Yes
is Blanche hiding in the cloak room ???
Which is why we have to mirror it on our own websites when it finally comes up. (CoR will be posting it there.)
today, Prof Cole and others have posted video of Furkan Dogan’s murder
Yupper
Nah. They just take turns playing the bad guy. It’s all kabuki.
well yeah. but she still has to show up and recite her lines
yupper again, its rotating villan……..and LET THEM EAT CAVIAR farce
This has gone way past kabuki. This is a full-blown Las Vegas extravaganza complete with dancing girls and elephants on the stage. It’s sickening.
Perhaps they just need to let their inner demons out every once in while so that they get a little exercise. Not playing the bad guy so much as being a bit more honest from time-to-time.
I have had it with Obama. But where to go????
Some short-term pain is central to the prescription. As Liberals (or Progressives if you prefer), we are TOTALLY taken for granted by the Dems. But ONLY if WE allow it to happen.
I am pledging RIGHT NOW that I will not only NOT vote for Dems in 2010 and 2012…..but I WILL VOTE REPUBLICAN!!!! Bitter medicine, I know, but anything less is insufficient.
Merely “staying home” doesn’t cut it; one lost vote, so what!! But to not ONLY
deny them my vote but ACTUALLY VOTE AGAINST THEM makes it a “twofer”. And if that strategy can be replicated often enough, the Dems CANNOT WIN !!!! And THEY will be the first to realize it!! If they ever..EVER..want to return to power, WE, THE REAL DEMOCRATS, hold the keys to what they want.
Here, Kitty Kitty Kitty!!!!
Until then I’m joining “Democrats Against Obama”, whose slogan will be:
Once was a mistake! TWICE would be TREASON !!!!!!
new name for CHUCKLES
……………………SHMUCKLES SCHUMER, has a lilt dontcha think?
Well said hoss, well said.
I don’t know which is worse: the fact that they respect voters’ so little as to try this transparent farce or the fact that there are many millions of voters who happily, gladly swallow it, hook, line and sinker.
problem is they also ENJOY being out of power,in the off years
Big Ed said it yesterday,if the new strategy is dissing WORKING famlies,it aint so smart
I don’t know if I’d go so far as vote for Republicans but I won’t fault you. There is no real difference between the parties anymore. Other than tinkering on the fringes, nothing has changed since 2008. The corporate feeding frenzy on the neck of the middle class and two wars go merrily on.
Blanche Lincoln voted Yes on Murkowski EPA Res.
wonder which of the No votes will campaign for her. Wonder if there are any candy stores in Little Rock ? :D
I’m inclined to agree. Orahma and the Democrats can’t be so stupid as to actually believe that they can diss and ignore Progressives and badmouth labor and still win elections. If they are that stupid, then we need someone smarter anyway.
The Dems are doing the full court press bidding of their corporate masters.
What Obama hath wrought is now spreading full and deep into the party and is exposed to full light.
There are no pretenses left. Haven’t been, for decades.
Only difference now is the ability to SEE the evil, and share it with others immediately thanks to the internet. Which the corps are gonna take from us, sooner than later. Likely it will be Democrats who legislate that one, too.
Pffft! ALL of them. They have political Stockholm Syndrome.
Any word on when Schumer and Rahm are emigrating to Israel? Any politician that has a “D” after his name that disparages unions is despicable.
Wow, it is one thing to be anti-union in Arkansas which does not have any unions to speak of, it is quite another to be anti-union from NY. What are the chances that Schumer would have beaten D’Amato without union help? If I were the AFL CIO, I would put ALL my money into organizing and not one dime into political action, it is not as if it has brought any influence.
the entrenched money and power is so big,ive lost hope
Unions are very strong in Israel.
Shmuckles needs to pay dearly
they also have universal single payer
vote third party.
Paid for by US and I wonder how many people in Gaza enjoy that?
and our congresshitters still have the option of a SWiss bank acct
getting dicey

GENEVA (AP) – The Swiss government is hoping to rid itself of a long-running headache over banking secrecy Tuesday when lawmakers are expected to approve a treaty to hand files on thousands of suspected tax cheats to U.S. authorities.
A standoff among lawmakers, courts and the government has held up ratification of the deal that Swiss and U.S. authorities signed in August to lift the threat of U.S. prosecution from Switzerland’s largest bank, UBS AG.
The hoped-for resolution may yet be stalled as members of the nationalist Swiss People’s Party and the left-of-center Social Democrats demand concessions in return for their consent.
disgracefull
Boy, my father is turning over in his grave. He would NEVER believe what this Democratic Party has become. Never.
Look, it’s out there in plain site for all to see. If you don’t see that the Democratis Party of today doesn’t represent us, then it’s because you don’t want to see. Because they are making it obvious, over and over and over again.
So when are real progressives going to smell the coffee? When are we going to stop fighting with each other over the wisdom/stupidity of voting for the “lesser of two evils” and come together and admit the obvious. THIS DEMOCRATIC PARTY IS NOT WORTH SUPPORTING. EVER.
The only hope, and I mean that’s a slim one, is if we, as a bloc, send the message that we will not tolerate this behaviour. If we instead break down and do exactly what R. Emanuel thinks we’ll do, and vote for the D at the last minute becase we can’t vote for the R, then we’re going to get more and more and more of the same.
Please, can’t we all come together and agree on at least the obvious? This Democratic Party does NOT represent progressives or their ideas. Period. Therefor progressives should not reward them with votes or dollars.
Can we?
A website that’s worth a look at. The resistance to Obama is growing.
http://www.squidoo.com/progressivesagainstobama
I’m looking at going Declined To State for Fall if I can still switch.
Then, I can go with Greens for Congress, Senate, and Pretzel in ’12, while still working my local vote for people and things that matter.
Send a message to Dems, as I won’t be voting for Boxer in ’10.
And I won’t be voting for Obama or any other Congressional Dems in ’12 (if he’s running, I think he’ll be asked to step down by the party and here comes HRC for ’12, whom I won’t support, either).
Send the message, we are lost at this point, I agree.
I can agree to that statement obviously but I’m afraid you’re preaching to the choir here.
Schumer could take Lincoln with him and the two of them can fight the socialists. A real Don Quixote and Sancho Panza.
I’m already in, hoss.
There’s an awful lot of folks here that still insist on voting for the lesser of two evils. Yes here.
When is Schumer up for reelection? Soon I hope and I hope the unions find someone to send this traitor packing.
Voting for the lesser of two evils is still voting for evil.
MIchael thanks for your post BTW, always appreciate your work.
I’ll wait to comment on the MM vid when a thread comes up on it.
It isn’t the Democratic Party I registered to vote in, either.
I wouldn’t vote for Nixon; why the hell should I vote for people who are to the right of him, even if they have Ds after their names?
And it even has t-shirts ! Glad to have that site. thanks.
The problem is that the Democrats will never accept any blame. If the progressives abandon them, (as I believe more than I will), it will be dirty, selfish hippies. If labor abandons them, it will be selfish, greedy unions. They will never accept that any amount of badmouthing or disrespectful behavior on their part can play any role in their electoral losses. Ans as long as they are that insulated and obtuse, they don’t deserve to hold office.
Spread the word Twain. It’s time to really put the heat on these anti-labor, pro corporatists in the WH and the halls of Congress. They have taken for granted the working and middle class for far to long. It’s time to draw the line in the sand.
I’m aware, which is why I’ve started asking what the differences between the Republicans and the Democrats are. Have we stopped even one war? Nope. Has the economic situation improved? Not much if at all. Can LGBT Americans serve in the armed forces? No way. Do they have the same civil rights as everyone else? Not even close, bud. Do the corporate lobbies still write the legislation? You bet. Is the middle class being squeezed to prop up short term corporate profits? Hell yes. Have we even addressed the environment? Nope, it’s worse!
Women can earn the same pay for the same work now and can’t be forced into arbitration when raped. LGBT Americans theoretically can’t be discriminated against IF they are federal employees, (though that doesn’t extend to partners).
Like I said: No change, just tinkering around the edges. A vote for either major party is a vote for more of the same. Period.
Don’t forget about these T-shirts:
2L4O
Too liberal for Obama
Whether you are a union member or not, and whether you believe some unions had corrupt leaders from time to time, the bottom line is that unions are made up of workers…those who are doing the actual labor. So, even if you are against specific unions and their methods, if you “demonize” unions in general, you are saying, I am against workers rights.
Democrats and Republicans are all corporatists. They alternately scorn and throw a few old bones to their bases and then they go on their merry corporatist funded way. Nobody should be surprised by Schumer’s remarks. The mask has not so much slipped as fallen off the Democrats. Anyone who still believes in them is doing so with their eyes shut.
The President and Congress may be too insulated from the average working person to understand what they are doing to the party. Rahm Emanuel is trying to resurrect “triangulation” for President Obama the same way it was done for former President Clinton.
As David Sirota said, “the term “triangulation” in politics means a set of leaders trying to join with their opponents to pass measures that run counter to those leaders’ own supporters. Typically, triangulation is practiced by presidents against their own parties in Congress, with the master of triangulation being President Bill Clinton who, among other things, rammed welfare reform and NAFTA “over the dead bodies” of rank-and-file Democratic lawmakers and the progressive movement.”
I expect to see an even greater level of “triangulation” practiced by President Obama.
My father was a teacher and received awards for his “humanitarian” activism. There is no doubt in my mind that he is turning over in his grave and would be extremely upset to see what has happened to the “Democratic” party.
Seems all the establishment Democrats are having a laugh a labor today. But it doesn’t surprise me at all. We have an administration that is pursuing an educational policy deliberately intended to destroy the last standing strong union, the teachers union. I don’t think the Democrats really want to pursue pro-labor policies anymore at all.
frustrating. fact is, it’s wealthy individuals who make up our government. the e-bay candidate in calif spent 81 millions dollars on her primary. a fricking primary!!! it’s the wealthy on both sides of the aisle. there are no poor or middle class in congress. period. and as long as the supreme court is packed with corporate conservatives letting corporations make your government their own little playground, this will NEVER change.
for schumer to attack labor and lincoln to attack liberals, it’s abundantly clear to me now, the public option didn’t have a chance. i can’t help think of jay rockefeller championing the public option every day until there were 35 senators on board, and nothing. dead silence from rockefeller. it was all a tease to get their corporate buddies re-elected.
It’s not so much that Democrats won’t accept blame, although it’s true that they won’t. I think Democrats have just reached the point where they don’t give a rat’s patoot about the voters, and the mask has come off. Behold: they are getting paid off very handsomely by the corporations. Why would they bother caring what the voters think?? Democrats, like their Republican counterparts (two faces of the one corporatist party), will either fix the votes to win, or they’ll just get a higher paying more cushy lobbying job if they’re voted out of office.
It doesn’t really matter to them – clearly – what citizens think, feel, see or believe. They got theirs. EFF you. And if the voters don’t like it: who cares? Too bad, so sad, get used to it.
Indeed. It’s all Kabuki show. Although it does somewhat stagger the imagination as to why E-Meg felt so compelled to spend so much money on her primary. I’m still mulling that one over. Maybe it’s because politics are the state level aren’t totally bought off yet and in the lap of the corporations??
CA is a huge economy, so one of my “musings” is that the corporations are all banding together to push E-Meg to win the Gov. position, and then you’re gonna see a real blood bath that will definitely inure to the benefit of the corporations and the uber rich. E-Meg has basically said as much.
Of course, these people are so staggeringly rich that spending $81million is chump change to them. Tells you something, doesn’t it? Disgusting.
Democrats know that their BIG BROTHER the corporate media will keep their voters stupid.
This is why, it is important for progressives to educate the people they come into daily about the actions of Obama and Democrats.
If the USA had an independent Media, democrats could not play the games they are playing.
This is why the Corporate Elite brought up the media after Viet Nam.
The current USA nightly news looks more TMZ, than Walter Cronkite
The net roots must stop talking to themselves and start talking to the streets.
The avg american wants to know what is going on in Washington.
Agree completely. Really really true, although I’m not so sure that the average American wants to know what’s going on in Wash DC. But still: the more that we can do to educate, the better.
So, maybe the only real solution “we the people” have to fight this in addition to our votes is to get out in our towns and cities in every state and use our voices to educate those in our family, friends, and community. Speak at town halls, speak at meetings, speak up whenever possible about what this corporate takeover of our political system is doing to this country.
Reach out and touch…make this country a better place.
While it’s slightly off topic, can I just say once again … Dana Milbank is an absolute moron! How the hell did someone so insanely stupid end up in his position?
The only place Harry Reid was ever a “dead man walking” was frenzied village fantasies where a poll represents 100% of political reality (+/- 4% … like a crystal ball!). Nobody ever addressed the fact that NONE of his challengers had the ability to actually beat him in a general election. And now … to the utter shock and amazement of our village idiots, these challengers are demonstrating the weaknesses they have always had which even a superficial analysis could have detected at any point during this whole “Harry Reid is toast” memefest.
I only regret the nation did not get an opportunity to experience the lulz of Danny Tarkanian actually getting a platform to present his advanced mental stylings.
And also too, also. Screw Chuck Schumer. He will NEVER hold the post of majority leader.
Ha!Ha!Ha! the WH don’t respect unions & now Schumer is bitch-slappin
unions…..I can’t crow enough…I told you so.
What do you expect when Union leadership buckled on HCR
And now I see Katrina Vanden Heuvel…saying she doesn’t believe the WH
feels this way.
What do you expect when these clowns rush in front of the TV cameras to defend Democrats.
The unions leadership is a push over the WH knows that & the Senators knows that. Now they are just embolden enough to say it publicly.
Yeah, but that’s different. Israeli unions are kosher.
You are reading this quite differently than I am, for sure. These guys just lost for Specter, just lost for Case, and are in the process of losing for Bennett. Even without taking down Lincoln (and even if Bennett prevails) the democratic establishment is absorbing some major blows from the “fucking retards”.
They bitch about how much the unions wasted. Any word on how much the Democrats poured into Lincoln? That money was equally wasted, but nobody talks about it.
This posturing isn’t for our benefit. They know we’re coming for their asses no matter how pretty they talk. IMO, it is to try and keep the rank-and-file from bolting their veal pen. The shrill congratulations these asshats are giving each other for a >4% win in an election currently under challenge for voter disenfranchisement is a sign of their weakness. Halter wasn’t even supposed to get close by village wisdom. Were they feeling confident, Schumer would be reaching out to the Unions, not slapping them.
Well, I’m not exactly your model progressive, but you don’t have to convince me. I’m going back to 3rd party. This little supporting Democrats experiment of mine has been an abject disaster.
Can we cancel Labor Day this fall? It just seems so disingenuous to celebrate something’s death. Maybe the 4th as well. I never did like that war celebration holiday and it messes up my schedule
Schumer is up for re-election right now, this year. You don’t hear much about his re-election, because all of the focus in New York is on the other Senate seat, Hillary’s – now Gillibrand’s, as to which there is also an election which is considered much more of a horse-race. In other words, everyone is expecting Schumer to win re-election in a walk.
If Obama wants to destroy the Democratic Party, fine. So be it. It just speeds up the process of forming a new party.
Progressive Labor Party anyone?
Good point. Martha Coakley lost. Arlen Spector lost. Lincoln got a temporary reprieve but she’s going down in just 5 months. If they are incumbents, they are endangered species.
We need to all stay away from the poles this year.
Just do not skip elections. Part of 99% of population is still a huge number. Look logically at options and if convinced go for a real third party. More third party members then better will be the congress and senate policies next year.
Just simply do not skip elections. Skipping means there is future pain inviting mandates, regressive taxes like VAT etc and cutbacks. Participating means inviting bonuses due to reinstatement of progressive taxes and lowering of middle class taxes which is good for our economy.
