President Obama apparently plans to submit long-stalled free trade deals with South Korea, Panama, and Colombia to Congress “as soon as possible,” according to a speech he made today.
“Simply put, export growth leads to job growth and economic growth,” Obama said in prepared remarks that focused on the need to bring about long-term economic stability through expanding U.S. exports.
Obama said he’d instructed U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk “to begin discussions to resolve outstanding issues” on a free trade agreement with South Korea before Obama’s visit to Seoul in November.
He said he hoped to resolve that agreement, as well as agreements with Panama and Colombia, for Congress to consider as soon as possible.
“We’re working to resolve outstanding issues with the free trade agreements with those key partners, and we’re focused on submitting them as soon as possible for congressional consideration,” Obama said.
If Obama wants to have the Colombia agreement see the light of day, there’s a number of “outstanding issues” to be resolved. Specifically, the murders of more union members in Colombia than the rest of the world combined every year. Forty-eight union members were killed in Colombia in 2009, 49 in 2008, and another 49 in 2007. All in all, more than 4,000 union members have been killed in Colombia in the last twenty years. If Obama wants a Colombia Free Trade agreement, this better be part of the “outstanding issues” to resolve.
Stepping back a bit – why does it make any political sense at all to push through three free trade agreements in an election year? What kind of moron would think voters want to hear about opening trade with Colombia, Panama, and South Korea as a way to spur economic growth?
Oh, maybe this guy.
White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel has been telling Democrats a win on the health issue will reverse the slide in public opinion, just as passage of another controversial proposal, the North American Free Trade Agreement, lifted President Bill Clinton in the polls.
Got it. Thanks, Rahm!

About Work in Progress
Thank you Michael
With 14.6 million unemployed, 25 million un- or under employed, and millions of others defined out of the workforce (but still unemployed), the last thing we need are “free” trade agreements which will leech off yet more US jobs. Only a corporatist who does not give a shit about American workers would support this. So let’s see that would be Obama and most of the Congress.
Yep, pretty much, Hugh.
Maybe someone who wants to pay a little less when they buy things. Or have we forgotten about those that have a less cash available for everyday purchases. Do we only represent the well-heeled that don’t care about prices?
Yep, right on.
If you lose your job through one of these schemes, you will find very quickly that saving a few cents was not worth losing your job. OTOH if you are a well-heeled investor, you can make more profit, initially, dumping your American workers and buying cheaper goods abroad. Nice try though at packaging a corporatist argument in populist terms.
Ross Perot’s never around when you need him.
Obama can care less about the Arizona immigration Bill, he does not want states to limit illegal labor flooding into the USA.
The USA is in a depression, and OBAMA is promoting more free trade?
Like the lady said on CNN last night, when asked about Obama response to the Gulf Oil Disaster sponsored by BP, Obama is on another Planet.
Don’t forget the white house has attack Union twice.
Dawn Johnsen did not get appointed thanks to Obama (Obama today decides to appoint another person to oversee Medicare program, he could have done this for Dawn Johnsen)
Obama supported Blanche Lincoln in Arkansas, and called Unions crazy for supporting Halter
How many people think Obama is a Dem? not many
Just who is on Obama’s economic team Free Trade means jobs will get sent overseas.
If good paying American jobs go to Korea, Panama, Columbia then American consumers won’t have the money to buy all the cheap Korea, Panama, <em>Columbian goods.
On the good side the weakening I expect in the U.S dollar will likely make the Columbians dilute their coke even more before they sell it.
That should reduce drug OD deaths.
I thought the U.S. already had free trade with Columbia in drugs. What else is there?
We are thinking of forming a third party after the election. This election its vote Green, Commie anyone but a GOPer, Libertarian or Blue Dog Dem.
Feingold’s my Senator now so I can at least vote for one Dem.
What is with all the trolling lately?
Sir, look at what NAFTA did to this country. NO MORE FREE TRADE.
and A BIG NO TO ONE WORLD ECONOMY.
Looks like a troll & run.
Well if instead of ten ships a month from Columbia coming to our ports a hundred ships come in a month ( total guess on the numbers for my part ). I’m sure customs won’t be able to search them all. I’m pretty sure everything from Columbia gets searched now.
If they can bring in coke by the ton on cheap ships instead of in condoms in some junkies stomach who rides a plane…Crap prices will go down.
The Pure stuff will kill tons of junkies.
Please whats the point of paying less if we lose good paying jobs? We are a Consumer economy Consumers need money to spend money.
Chicken and Egg First you must have money to be able to enjoy spending money with cheaper prices.
Neoclassical economics in its finest hour.
Free Trade with Korea just why did Obama bailout GM if he was planning this?
To make sure that auto workers’ wages & benefits were lowered a lot, as a message to other workers, before the auto workers are all fired.
Thanks :) Junkies don’t have healthcare OD’s I think are expensive they are all emergency room visits Obama passes this bill healthcare costs will skyrocket.
Check out what the original Obama had to say about Free Trade -

Ok remind me to stay clear of Detroit if the Midwest gets a hot summer I expect riots. African American unemployment + Hot temperatures factor in unemployment being cut off and we should have riots.
Sometimes I think I need more math and sociology classes if I ever go back to school.
He’s got to go…primary him, if that doesn’t work, stay home in 2012. What can the Republicans do to us that is worse than this guy?
O sez in public what he needs to say to get elected. In the vetting & fundraising parties with the PTB, he sings a different tune. Always has. Read Paul Street’s book on him.
My husband and I agree with you – Detroit could very well see riots. And I am in the heart of Detroit every day so I hope not but it would not surprise me. People have been hurting here much longer than the rest of the country.
What a jerk. Like with most things, Mr. Transparency and Accountability actually did have a problem with trade with Columbia when he was running for election.
Thank you, I actually have the book! :^) That is why I call him Original Obama and Elected Obama (sometimes Pre-Obama and Post-Obama for short).
I hope I’m wrong. I wonder if Obama is blind?
Pre-Popinjay and Post-Popinjay I prefer. Alliteration makes it roll off the tongue.
Popinjay: A strutting supercilious person.
Street’s book is great. Highly recommeded “Barack Obama and the Future of American Politics”. I read Street before the primaries as well as blackagendareport.com, so I was on to this con man way back. Now how to keep getting the word out. Call in to Mark Thompson’s “Make It Plain” on Sirius Left.
The magic for Rahm is that this will further distract liberals a) because it’s a nonsensical priority, politically, legislatively and electorally; and b) he has corporate donors who want it done and that’s what he’s gonna do. That it will piss off the mounting number of un- and underemployed in America he seems to regard as a feature.
Does FDL need its own version of a “Worst Person” award; I don’t know how we’d keep track, but Rahm would certainly be a frequent recipient. Of course, his boss expects to reap the benefit of all that Rahm does, so he would have to be included as the flip side of the Emanuel coin.
LOL, I had actually thought a lot about that, thinking that might be a regular for me to do on the Seminal and I was gonna call it the Asshole of the Week. But maybe someone will take that up. I’d love to see it, be fun.
Don’t worry Obama’s got it covered:
Oh, sorry — old story.
http://blogs.wsj.com/washwire/2008/04/02/obama-vows-opposition-to-colombia-trade-deal/
Great catch. I may include this in my scandals list.
The Democratic Party majority in the House derailed these particular agreements before Obama became president, and we can do it again.
Shiney trinkets do nothing for all the people who are losing thier jobs.
He’s always been the same. It’s just that we notice his mask of sanity slip a bit more often in public now that he’s in the spotlight. But he was caught on film back in 2006 pitching attacks on social security to the benefit cutters of Robert Rubin’s The Hamilton Project.
It’s on Youtube:

“too many interested in defending programs the way they were written in 1938″
Speaker Pelosi and VP Biden were a major supporters of NAFTA. http://www.nolanchart.com/article368.html
The primary supporters of NAFTA are in power now. http://www.nolanchart.com/article368.html
Awesome catch, thank you.
