Labor unions came out in force against the Obama Administration’s NAFTA-style Korea Free Trade deal today, breaking nearly a week of silence since the agreement was dropped late Friday night.

The AFL-CIO labor federation, the United Steelworkers (USW), and the Communications Workers (CWA) all released simultaneous statements Thursday afternoon saying they would oppose the Korea Free Trade deal.

Two major AFL-CIO unions, the Communication Workers of America (CWA), with the United Auto Workers (UAW) came out hard against Citizens United, joining National Nurses United from the AFL in opposing the decision.

It looks like the White House’s fragile alliance with labor unions for the health care bill is breaking apart. Now CWA is engaging in an open spat with the White House’s recent defense of the excise tax on its blog.

A new report from Labor Professor John Logan and American Rights at Work details multiple violations of the law by T-Mobile, recurring intimidation of employees, and what one employee called a “culture of fear” preventing employees from joining together in a union. Of course, the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) handed the company one of its most harsh penalties: forcing the company to post a flier and promise not to break the law again.

CWA takes its fight against the health care excise tax on benefit plans one step higher – launching online ads against the tax.

The Communications Workers of America just put out a statement hitting the Senate health care bill, specifically slamming the regressive excise tax on health care plans. CWA appears to have gone one step further than other major unions with this statement.
